What’s Happening

A garage door that opens slowly or unevenly almost always has a problem with its springs, cables, or rollers – components that carry the door’s weight and keep it balanced. When one side loses tension or a roller binds, the door drags, tilts, or stutters instead of gliding straight up. This is your door telling you something mechanical is failing, and it usually gets worse, not better, on its own.

Call (512) 883-4374

The good news is that the symptom itself is a useful clue. A door that leans to one side points to a different cause than one that moves uniformly but just feels sluggish. Below, we break down the four most common culprits so you can describe what you’re seeing before a technician even arrives – which speeds up the diagnosis and gets you a faster fix.

Why It Happens

1. A Worn or Broken Torsion Spring

The torsion spring sits on a metal shaft above the door opening and does the heavy lifting – literally. Over time, the spring metal fatigues and loses tension, so the opener motor has to work harder and the door creeps up instead of rising cleanly. If one spring in a two-spring system breaks entirely, the door will almost certainly rise crookedly, with one corner lagging behind the other. You may also hear a loud bang – sometimes described as a gunshot – the moment a spring snaps. Do not attempt to adjust or replace torsion springs yourself. These components are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury if handled without the right tools and training. Stop using the door and call your local Marlow Garage Door Repair team.

2. A Fraying or Slack Cable

Cables run alongside each side of the door and work in partnership with the springs to lift and lower the door evenly. When a cable frays, loosens, or slips off its drum, one side of the door loses support and the whole panel starts to travel at an angle. You can often spot a cable problem by looking at the vertical tracks on each side – if one cable hangs loose or looks visibly kinked and twisted, that’s your answer. Like springs, cables are under significant tension and are not safe to reattach or tighten without proper equipment.

3. Worn or Damaged Rollers

Rollers are the small wheels that sit inside the vertical and horizontal tracks and guide the door through its travel. Steel rollers wear down over years of use; nylon rollers can crack or chip. A single bad roller can create enough drag to slow the whole door down or cause it to wobble in the track. Listen for a grinding or squealing noise that lines up with specific points in the door’s travel – that sound usually corresponds to the bad roller’s position on the track.

4. Misaligned or Bent Tracks

If the metal tracks that guide the door get knocked out of alignment – by a bump from a car, a settling foundation, or just years of vibration – the rollers have to fight their way through the curve instead of rolling freely. The door slows down at the same spot every single time, or you hear a rhythmic rubbing sound at one point in the cycle. Look at the gap between the roller and the track edge along the full run of each side: it should be consistent. A gap that widens or closes noticeably in one section points to a track alignment issue.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop using the door manually or with the opener. Running a struggling door repeatedly puts extra stress on the opener motor and can turn a manageable repair into a larger one. If you suspect a spring or cable issue, this step is especially important – a door under uneven tension can drop suddenly.
  • Look, don’t touch the springs or cables. Stand back and take a visual inventory. Is the door leaning left or right? Is there a cable visibly hanging loose? Is there a gap in the torsion spring (a broken spring will have a visible separation in the coil)? Note what you see – these details help the technician arrive prepared.
  • Take a short video on your phone. A 15-second clip of the door attempting to open is worth more than any description. It shows the speed, the lean, and where the hesitation happens. Your local Marlow team can review it before they arrive if you share it when you book.
  • Check whether both sides of the door move together. Watch from a safe distance as the door starts to lift. If one corner rises faster than the other, you’re likely dealing with a spring or cable issue. If the whole door moves slowly and uniformly, worn rollers or a track problem are more likely.
  • Disengage the opener if the door needs to stay closed. Most openers have a red emergency release cord that lets you lock the door in place manually. If your door is stuck mid-travel and you need it closed for security, use this cord carefully and do not force the door – call your local Marlow team for same-day service.

How We Fix It

When a Marlow technician arrives, the first thing they do is a full mechanical inspection – springs, cables, rollers, tracks, and the opener itself. They’re trained on eight major brands: LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Craftsman, and Raynor – so if your opener is part of the problem, they already know the system.

Once the root cause is identified, you get a written price before any work begins. That number doesn’t change when the job is done. The two services that most often resolve a slow or uneven door are garage door spring repair and garage door cable repair, though a general garage door repair visit covers the full inspection and any roller or track work needed.

Most spring and cable repairs are completed in a single visit, typically within a couple of hours. Every repair is covered by Marlow’s 365-Day Done Right Promise – if the fix isn’t right, we come back and make it right, in writing, for a full year. The Relay Visibility Guarantee means you get a live arrival time you can track, before-and-after photos, and a digital invoice you pay from a link.
